Long, Medium, and Short-Term Goals Meeting Template

We all need lots of powerful long-range goals to help us past the short-term obstacles.” – Jim Rohn

To maintain a successful business, you must have engaged, motivated, enthusiastic employees. Employees who are happy with their jobs and feel appreciated improve their performance and productivity, which benefits the company’s overall health. Encouraging them to set development goals that keep them going forward is one of the best methods to ensure that your staff members feel engaged and motivated at work.

Goal-setting meetings involve setting specific, role-oriented, and measurable objectives that the employee works toward while working at your company. Essentially, setting the goals requires the manager and employee collaboration. The dreams consider the employee’s growth targets, resource availability, and future desired roles. All of these need to align with the company’s overall goals.

Depending on the specific goals, you might need to space out the frequency of the meetings. Even so, you will have to meet at least every month for the medium and long-term goals, while short-term goals will require weekly one-on-one sessions.

Since it’s a 1-on-1 meeting, it’s just you, the manager, and your direct report who will attend the meeting. Setting short-term and long-term goals is essential for the employee and the company’s growth and should be taken seriously.

How to Use a Long, Medium, and Short-Term Goals Meeting Template

“Every goal that you will ever pursue will require a plan of action. Whether you are pursuing your life’s destiny or striving to obtain a particular goal, you must be able to see things as you desire them to be.” – T. D. Jakes

You must be prepared to save time to run an efficient long, medium, and short-term goals meeting. This is where our detailed template comes in. The template outlines the agenda items: Short-Term Goals, Medium-Term Goals, Long-Term Goals, Action Items, and Notepad.

All the sections help you stick to the topic at hand and hold the one-on-one meeting without mishaps. Before holding the meeting, it’s essential to let the employee know they have a goal meeting scheduled. That way, they can adequately prepare the items for discussion and reports, if any.

Make the meeting informal, but don’t forget to bring your notes. You and your direct report need to feel comfortable, as sometimes, meeting with the boss can be pretty intimidating for some people. Stick to the plan, and anything else that doesn’t involve the goals, should be left for another time or when the meeting has ended.

What’s inside this Long, Medium and Short-Term Goals Meeting Template:

Now that you know what is required before the meeting, what are the sections in our meeting agenda templates stand for?

1Short-Term Goals

Here, you list the short-term goals the employee needs to accomplish. These are the goals that can be achieved within twelve months or less. As always, while they are the employee’s objectives, they should align with the company’s vision and mission.

2 Medium-Term Goals

List and discuss all the medium-term goals in this section. All the objectives that take from a couple of months to about five years go in this section, and this could include the employee pursuing another degree or learning a new skill, among others. These are important since they are a step up from the short-term goals.

3Long-Term Goals

This is where you and your direct report discuss their long-term plan and objectives. These take longer than five years, and all the short-term and medium-term goals should build up to long-term goals. This is the big picture for the employee, and you, their employer, must help them achieve it.

4✅ Action Items

What are the steps the direct report is going to undertake to achieve the goals? How are you going to help them? Discuss all the action items, and establish the course of action. Also, discuss the available resources and time and how you can collaborate to ensure they achieve the objectives while giving the best to the company.

5📝 Notepad

AIf there is anything to add to the meeting, you discuss it in this section. Other issues related to the employee and their goals need to be addressed go here. Ensure that everyone is happy and content with the outcome at the end of the meeting. If there are any pending items, they need to be handled so the employee can start working on the goals.

6 Conclusion

Holding a meeting to discuss the individual and team goals is critical for the growth of any company. This will help improve employee engagement and motivation, and job performance. Setting short-term, medium-term, and longer-term goals will go a long way in giving your company a competitive edge over other organizations. By setting goals with your employee, you have a higher chance of retaining them as they know they have your support in their growth. This, in turn, helps reduce turnover.

To keep your direct report on toes about their objectives, it’s essential to hold the long, medium, and short-term goal meetings as often as possible. In the end, everyone wins, and to hold efficient one-on-one meetings with your employees, why not use our template? It’s specifically designed to assist you in seamlessly handling such arrangements.
