🎙Takeaways from the Supermanagers podcast
Episode 125: Tony Jamous (CEO and Co-founder at Oyster HR)
TLDR: Tony Jamous founded Oyster in 2020 and grew from 0 to 650 employees in just 2.5 years! The first hire at Oyster was an Executive Talent Recruiter. This person helped Tony find Executives that were fit for purpose, had the right skillset, had mission alignment and helped build diversity. Tony wanted to make sure that his first hires had seen the 0->1 stage of a company but ALSO the 1->10 stage and beyond. It’s not easy to find people like that and certainly not 5 of them in 6 months. Today, Oyster’s teams range from 80 countries, with 60% being women (including the leadership team).
Tony believes in two important things:
- The best team wins.
- The best culture wins.
Episode 126: Ben Eubanks (Chief Research Officer at Lighthouse)
TLDR: Workplace flexibility is more than just defining where you work. In this episode, Ben shares a ton of insights from his research and explains the real definition of flexibility, what work democracy is, and how to increase workplace autonomy.
Try Ben’s autonomy exercise:
- Ask your team: On a scale from 1 to 10 (one being “I have no control over ever anything, everything has to be approved before I make any decision” to 10 being “I’ve got a lot of choices, I’ve got a lot of flexibility, a lot of autonomy in my work”), how much control do you have?
- Ask the manager: On a scale from 1 to 10, how much control do your people have?
The bigger the gap in answers between the team and the manager, the bigger the coaching opportunity is.
Episode 127: Mike Adams (CEO and Co-founder of Grain)
TLDR: Mike leads a fully remote team, but confessed to hating remote work. Why would a leader choose to run a remote-only team if he himself hates the modality? Because 83% of his team prefers fully remote work and thrives in that environment. Mike realized that to be a good leader, he couldn’t project his work style and modality preferences onto his whole team.
